This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

A little more information about Michael Schauffele – He is co-administrator of the Shively Family DNA project at FamilyTree DNA. He is the initiator of the above reunion in Germany.  He was born in Stuttgart/Germany on 24-Jul-1942. In 1969 he graduated from the University of Stuttgart with a degree in structural and civil engineering. In 1963 he married Renate Christine Hofman and they have 3 sons and 5 grandchildren. For 40 years he was owner and general manager of a medium-sized group of companies in the area of Stuttgart concerning construction of all kinds of buildings, homebuilding, project development, architectural and engineering offices. In 1983 he and his wife bought a small ranch with the name of “German-S- Ranch” near the city of Visalia, CA. In 2003 they immigrated to live full time on the ranch growing oranges, grapefruit and olives while leasing the pasture to cattle breeders. Michael is still doing business in Schweiberdingen, close to Stuttgart, leasing out an office building which is locally managed by his youngest son, Kaj-Domnnik Schauffele. For almost 40 years Michael’s time for genealogy research was limited by his business career. From about 2013 he started intensively researching again. Finding relatives scattered around the world became the main focus of his family research. Michael is hoping to be able to summarize his genealogy research and write a family chronicle about “The descendants of the two Scheiffele from Gingen upon Fils” to preserve his family history for future generations.

1820 Ohio Census

The state of Ohio was admitted to the Union in 1803.  Many of our Shively families can be found at one time or another in this state.  On the 1820 Ohio census records there are at least twenty-one Shively families listed.  This article is a guide to help those doing research on the Shively families in early Ohio.  Information from the “Descendants of Christian Shively of Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co. and Later York Twp., York Co, Penna.”, 1941, by Arthur G. Black and “Schaublin (Shively) Families from the District of Waldenburg, Baselland, Switzerland”, 1978, by George W. Andrews was used to help determine the lineages.  Thank you to Alice Shively Freed and Imogene Sawvell Davis who also gave support to this project.
From the Arthur G. Black information we know the Shively families in Columbiana County were descendants of Christian Scheibly (Shively) baptized 25-Dec-1718 in the village of Oberdorf, District of Waldenburg, Canton of Baselland, Switerzland and Esther Naffin (Naff or Neff). Christian died ca. 1773 in York County, PA.  Their son John Shively born 24-Jul-1748 married Eve.  John was never heard from again after an Indian raid in 1781. Three sons of John and Eve are found in Columbiana County, OH in 1820.  Christian Shively and Conrod (Conrad) Shively are listed in Middleton Township and it is believed that the third son is the John Shively listed in Fairfield Township.    A grandson of Christian Shively and Esther is listed in Knox Township.  Daniel Shively in Knox Township is the son of Christian Shively and Catherine Sophia Smith.  Daniel married first Mary Boyer and second Sally Metz.      The lineage of Jacob Shiveley in Fairfield Township and John Shiveley in Middletown Township could not be established.  If you have information from your research regarding these families, and would be willing to share, the information could be included in a future issue of the newsletter or blog.
Daniel Shively baptized 29-Jan-1730 married Barbara Tschumi.  Daniel and Barbara left Frederick County, VA and lived in Washington County, PA. Daniel died ca. 1808 in Jefferson County, OH and Barbara died ca. 1822/1823.  The Daniel Shiveley listed in Wayne Township, Jefferson County, is most likely their son.   The lineage of William Shiveley in Wayne Township could not be established.
From the George W. Andrews information we know that Ulrich (Schaublin) Shively was baptized 8-Jan-1722 in Baselland, Switzerland and died in Frederick County, MD.  Ulrich married Elizabeth Thomas who was baptized 6-Apr-1727 in Zeglingen, District of Farnsburg, Baselland, Switzerland.  Their son, Isaac Shively, is listed in Jefferson Township, Montgomery County, OH.  Isaac married Elizabeth Bossler.   Jacob Shively, who is also listed in Jefferson Township, Montgomery County, is the son of Isaac Shively and Elizabeth.

Jacob Shively is listed on the Highland Township, Muskingum County record.  This Shively family descends from Loudon County, VA.  Jacob was born 29-May-1766 died 16-May-1837 Muskingum Co, OH and married Ann Hopkins born ca. 1767 died 4-Feb-1851 Muskingum Co, OH.   The lineage of John Shively in Highland Township could not be established but it is believed that he is probably the son of Jacob Shively and Ann.
The Twin Township, Ross County record lists Jacob Shively. Jacob Shively is the son of George Shively and Rebecca Riley.  George Shively was born ca. 1758 in VA and died ca. 1815 in Ross County.    Jacob was born 27-Apr-1797 Loudoun Co., VA and died ca. 1885 in Ross County.  He married Eleanor Fernandis.      Rebecca Shively in Union Township is the wife of George Shively and mother of Jacob Shively listed in Twin Township.
Elizabeth Snyder Shively, listed in Nimishillen Township, Stark County was the second wife and widow of Jacob Shively.  Jacob was born ca. 1747 and died 3-Feb-1814 in Stark County.  He was married first to Elizabeth Ulrich and then second to Elizabeth Snyder.  (Note: George Andrews recorded that “the treatment of Jacob Shively, as having married twice, is an interpretation which as yet lacks positive proof”.)   Ullery Shively, son of this Jacob, is listed in Osnaburg Township. Ullery (Ulrich) married Christina Shideler. .   Daniel  Shively listed in Osnaburg Township is the son of Ulrich (Ullery) Shively and Christina Shideler.    Jacob Shively, who married Barbara Thomas, is a son of Jacob Shively and brother to above Ullery Shively.  Barbara Thomas Shively, widow of Jacob, is listed in Paris Township.  Daniel Shively is the son of Jacob Shively and Barbara Thomas and is listed in Paris Township.
In Austintown Township, Trumbull County is Frederick Shiveley who married Elizabeth Flick.  Frederick is the son of Peter Shively who married first Elizabeth (last name unknown) and second Christina Linn.    The lineage of Jacob Shiveley could not be established.  If anyone has information on Jacob please share with the other Shively researchers.

Levi Shively And Rebecca Wallace Of Lawrence County, Ohio

Levi Shively and Rebecca Wallace
A recent query was made by a family member looking for information on Robert Shively who married Marjorie Bonen.  A newspaper announcement of the wedding of this couple was located in The Star, Marion, Ohio, Wednesday June 2, 1943, Page 4, Column 2.    The information in the wedding announcement prompted a census search for Marion County, Ohio.  On the 1930 census of Marion County, Ohio, Marion City in the household of Henry Hecker was found the family of Fred Shively age 32, wife Margaret age 30, son Robert age 11 and son Richard age 7.  On the 1920 census of Marion County, Ohio, Marion City is listed the family of Fred Shively age 22, wife Marguerite age 20 and son Robert age 11 months. In this household is listed Henry Hecker age 19, and identified as a brother-in-law.   A search of the 1910 census records for  Fred Shively and his parents was successful.  Located on the 1910 Lawrence County, Ohio, Mason township was listed the family of Monroe Shively age 38, wife Annie age 40, son Freddie age 10, son Enos age 9, son Emery age 6, son Wallace age 4 and son Steward age 1yr and 11 months.  From the census records of 1900 Lawrence County, Ohio, Mason Township is located Monroe Shively born March 1872, wife Annie born August 1871 and son Fred born August 1899.  A couple of entries prior to this family is the family of Levi Shively born March 1845, wife Rebecca born October 1844, daughter Alice M born March 1874, son Alzo born June 1876, son Fred born March 1879, son William born February 1881, son Ora born 1883 and son Oliver born October 1887.  To further verify the lineage of this family located on the 1880 Lawrence County, Ohio, Mason Township is the family of Levi Shively age 35, wife Rebecca age 35, son Alonzo age 10, son Monroe age 8, daughter Alice age 6, son Alzo age 4, son Frederic age 1 and father-in-law Preston Wallace age 77.
From an unidentified and yellowed newspaper obituary the following information can be learned about Levi Shively:  "Levi Shively was born in Columbiana county, Ohio, March 30, 1845 and died Jan. 23, 1912, age 66 years, 9 months and 23 days.    His parents moved to Gallia county when he was two years of age.  When he was eighteen years old he enlisted in Company L, 12th Ohio volenteer cavalry, and served two years and one month.     He was married March 2, 1868, to Rebecca Wallace.  To this union was born 9 children, all of whom survive him, except Alzo and an infant child deceased.    In 1868 he removed to Lawrence county near Wilgus, where he resided until his death.
Mr. Shively was a man of strong character and a firm believer in all doctrines of right. This he sought to instill in the minds of his children.  His advice to them was ever of good and right, and especially did he encourage them to earnestness in church work and all public institutions for good.
His illness was of long duration.  For six years he was unable to do any work, but for the last two months he was confined to his bed.  His suffering was long and severe, yet he bore it all with patience, and during his sickness he gave evidence of the hope he had in christian faith.
He leaves to mourn his loss a wife and the following children:  Alonzo, Monroe, Alice, Fred, William, Ora and Oliver all of Wilgus, besides the following brothers and sister; David Shively of Alice, O., Mrs. Emily Coy of Vinton, Ohio, Mrs. Mary Clark, of Columbus, Ohio, and Andrew Shively of Baltimore, Ohio."

Shively Family In Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 In New Orleans

Lafayette Cemetery No. 1

In the November 2010 issue of the Shively Newsletter information was requested on who might be buried in New Orleans, Louisiana in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1.  This cemetery is located in the historic Garden District. It is among the city’s earliest and most significant aboveground burial sites.  Once part of the Livaudais Plantation, Lafayette No. 1 was designated a city burial site in 1833.
At the head of this grave was probably a marker listing the names of the persons buried here.  At the time of visit this marker was missing.  Research on the surname Shively in New Orleans has given some clues as to who might be in this cemetery.   From the census records and information extracted from the New Orleans newspapers it is known that there were Shively’s who did live in the Garden District in the area of this cemetery.
The one confirmed Shively entombment here was recorded in the following obituary. Mention of Mrs. Bland Huddleston, mother of William C. Shively, is referenced.  This William C. Shively is the  grandson of William and Mary Shively and son of William Cushing Shively and Bland Huddleston:
The Times-Picayune, Friday, September 30, 1932, Page 2, Column 8:
SHIVELY—At Chicago, Ill., on Tuesday September 27, 1932, Mrs. Bland Huddleston Shively, mother of William C. Shively.
Remains will arrive in New Orleans on Friday evening. September 30, 1932 at 7:50 o’clock via I. C. Railroad.  Funeral services will be held from the funeral home of Pat J. McMahon-Coburn Co., 2305 Canal, corner N. Mire, on Saturday morning, October 1, 1932, at 11 o’clock.
Interment in Lafayette cemetery No. 1.

For Shively researchers interested in this Shively line additional research was done. Located in the marriage records for Louisiana was found the marriage of William Shirley to Mary Haley on 3-Dec-1867 in Orleans Parish.  On the 1870 Orleans Parish, 11 Ward of New Orleans was found the family of William Shively age 27 born in Indiana, wife Mary H. age 28 born in Liverpool and daughter Indiana age 1yr 2 months born in Louisiana.
On the next census record in 1880 the family of William and Mary Shively has grown and listed in Orleans Parish, 200 Annunciation Street, New Orleans is William Shively age 38 born Indiana, wife Mary born in England, daughter Indiana age 11, son William age 8 and daughter Mary age 6.
The children of William and Mary Shively married as follows:  Mary Louisa Shively married Roderick S. Huddleston on 1-Aug-1894, William C Shively married Bland R. Huddleston on 28-Jan-1897 in New Orleans,  Indiana Myrtilla Shively married William Frederick Weishaupt on 25-Mar-1908.
On the 1900 Orleans Parish, 1427 Harmony Street, New Orleans is listed the son of William and Mary Shively.  The son William C. Shively age 28 born Oct 1871 in Louisiana is listed with wife Bland R age 28 born Dec 1871 in Mississippi and son WIlliam C., Jr age 2 born 1897 in Louisiana.    By 1900 the daughter of William and Mary Shively, Mary Louisa, has moved and is living in Chicago, IL with her husband Roderick Huddleston and children Roderick age 4 and Mae age 2.
Other record sources were searched to give additional information on these Shively families.  A death certificate was found for William Henry Shively.  He died  in New Orleans on 27-Oct-1930 at the age of 87 years 3 months.  The certificate states the deceased was the widower of Mary Holey, and the son of Ulric Shively and Polly Johnson, both natives of Indiana.
From this information we then know the parents of William Henry Shively were Ulery Shively born 1819 Montgomery Co. OH died 1858 Madison Co, IN and Mary Jane “Polly” Johnson who were married 9-April-1838 in Rush Co., IN.  William would have been the grandson of Jacob C Shively and Mary Siler.  William’s grandparents were Isaac David Shively (1759-1823) and Elizabeth Bossler (1764-1800).  Finally, William would have been the great-grandson of Ulrich Schaublin (1721-1776) and Elizabeth Thommen (1722-1777).
