The intelligence last Saturday afternoon, that Simon Shively was dead, caused no small surprise. His illness began last Thursday evening, and all that medical skill could do, proved to be of no avail. The funeral took place Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, interment being made in the Newville Cemetery, west of town. He is survived by a wife, two sons, William and Harvey, and two daughters, Miss Laura, at home and Mrs. Florence Landis, of Brooklyn. The two sons returned from Illinois only a short time ago, and Mrs. Landis had come on from Brooklyn, so that all were gathered around the old home. The fore part of the week, Mrs. Landis had returned to Brooklyn, only to be summoned home where but a few days before, all had been mirth, sunshine and home pleasures.
The deceased has been a life long resident of Newville, locating here in 1855, and in 1862 he was married. He served in town council in 1861, '65, '67, '70, '78, '81 and '84. In 1883 he was one of the regulators and in '85 he served again as a regulator and assistant assessor. Again in 1888 he served as school director, in '89 and '91 as judge of election, and was one of the present board of school directors.
His occupation was that of a tanner, and his name was associated with the late John Wagner in the above business. He was a consistent member of Zion's Lutheran church, and was aged 64 year.
An autopsy was held by Dr. W. B. Reynolds, assisied(sic) by Drs. G. W. Stewart and J. C. Claudy, yesterday morning showed that death was caused by paralysis of the bowels.
The directors and public school teachers, attended the funeral service.
The following was extracted from The Star and Enterprise, Newville, Pennsylvania, Thursday, December 20, 1906, Page 4, Column 1:
Mrs. Rosanna Shively died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. Weaver about 1 mile east of town, Monday night at 9 o'clock, from a general breakdown of of health, aged about 77 years. Mrs. Shively was the widow of the late Simon Shively who conducted a large Tannery North of Newville with the late John Wagner, some years ago. Mrs. Shively was well known throughout this community and leaves the following children to mourn her loss:
William and Mrs. Weaver, fo Newville, Harvey, fo Harrisburg, and Mrs. J. M. Landis, of Brooklyn. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran church of this place. The funeral will be held Thursday at 10 o'clock. Interment in Newville Cemetery.
