This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

Former POW Shively A Lasting Inspiration
By Jerry Hughes
 Special to The Spokesman-Review
If we were exceptionally fortunate in our lifetime, we may be blessed by knowing a person of uncommon valor and grace. James R. Shively was such a man. His vita confirms the talents and accomplishments of an individual of heroic stature.
Modest to a fault, Jim always dismissed efforts to extend to him even the humblest of tributes. A life so well-lived, so fruitful and so inspiring demands, however, a richer accounting.
Raised in the Spokane Valley, Jim graduated with honors from West Valley High School in 1960 and accepted the U.S. Sen. Henry Jackson's appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy.
Because of its demanding atmosphere, Jim seriously considered leaving. In typical Shively fashion, though, he reflected upon and analyzed the breadth of the academy's goals and opportunities, and he graduated in the upper ranks of his class. He went on to Georgetown University, where he received a master's degree in international relations.
As the Vietnam War was escalating, the Air Force afforded him the opportunity to train and fly its top single-seat, single engine jet fighter, the F-105.
After his training, Jim was sent to Thailand. On his 69th mission, while doggedly holding to his pre-set bombing pattern over Hanoi in spite of intense anti-aircraft fire, 2nd Lt. James Shively was hit and forced to eject. He landed in a muddy rice paddy and was quickly captured by waiting enemy ground forces.
The date was May 5, 1967. He would courageously endure more than 2,000 days in the infamous, "Hanoi Hilton" in a room with no shower and only a bucket for his body wastes. He was exposed to intense beating, torture, deprivations and barbaric abuse.
On Feb. 18, 1973, after nearly six years he was released. The emaciated man who emerged from his tiny, hot, rat-infested cell was, by every benchmark, even more formidable than the brave young pilot who entered. A White House reception, and a hero's welcome home, paid merited recognition to this Silver Star service to his beloved nation.
After his discharge from service in June 1974, Shively graduated from Gonzaga Law School and began private practice in 1977. A group of Washington state Democratic leaders recruited him to run for office. The long-range goal was a U.S. Senate seat, but Jim declined. His soul mate, Nancy, and his beloved daughters would not be denied his constant presence, attention, guidance and love for the remainder of his bountiful life.
Within a  few years, he was asked to join the Eastern Washington U.S. Attorney's Office and would, over a 20-year career, rise to the position of senior supervisor, overseeing both the criminal and civil divisions. He served one year as interim U.S. attorney while President Bush's appointee awaited Senate confirmation in 2008.
Shively was a selfless volunteer mentor to numerous local high school and regular GU political science class guest speaker. Anyone who participated in one of his "java and jabber" sessions was engulfed by his warmth, humor, intelligence, gentleness and compassion.
James R. Shively was a precious gift to his family, friends, community and nation. He was a patriot in the finest meaning of the word.
Today we mourn his passing, and tomorrow we shall miss him. Let us, however, reflect on his exceptional life and be profoundly grateful.
Jerry Hughes teaches political science at Gonzaga University. He is a former Washington state senator from Spokane.

The following obituary was found in The Spokesman-Review, Spokane, Washington, Sunday, February 26, 2006, Page 20, Column 5:
Shively, James R.
3/23/42-2/18/06
Born in Wheeler City, Texas, Jim was raised in Spokane, beginning at age five. He attended West Valley High School, then graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1964. He went on to earn a Master's degree in International Relations from Georgetown University in 1965. He then completed pilot training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona in 1966 and combat crew training in the F-105D at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. He was assigned to the 357th Tac Fighter Squadron at Takhli, Thailand in December 1966. On his 69th mission to Vietnam, his F-105 was shot down and he was captured and held Prisoner of War from May 5, 1967 - February 18, 1973. Captain Shively resigned from the Air Force in 1974 and attended law school at Gonzaga University. He married Nancy Banta in 1976 and together they raised four beautiful daughters: Amy Hawk, Jane Shively, Laura Watson and Nicole Woodland. Jim served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington for over 20 years, and interim United States Attorney 2000-2001. Jim was preceded in death by his mother, Jeannette Shively, his father, Harold Shively; and his sister Phyllis Shively Gilliland. His immediate family includes: his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, and three grandchildren. Jim died of cancer and passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family. The day of his passing marked the 33rd anniversary of his release from Vietnam. The family invites you to attend a celebration in honor of Jim on Friday, March 3rd, at CenterPlace at Mirabeau Point Park, 2426 N. Discovery Place in the Spokane Valley from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Memorial gifts may be made to the local Veteran's Administration, Hospice of Spokane, The Hutton Settlement, Northwest Behavioral Associates, or a charitable organization of your choice. The Glendower lode, on Columbia mountain, owned by Peter and David Shively, continues to rank well as an ore producer. Clark & Co. have commenced to sink a shaft, at the end of a 60-foot-cross-cut which they have driven to the lode, which shows a small vein of good ore.

The citizens of Frankford township were greatly shocked last evening to learn that Mr. Peter Shively, on of their most highly respected citizens, had died quite suddenly at 5 o'clock.
Mr. Shively resides near the Stone Church and has been in declining health.
The suddenness of the sad and entirely unexpected demise occasioned a great shock to the family and cast a gloom over the entire community. F, 209th Penna. Vols.  He was identified with Capt. Colwell Post, 201, GAR, of this place. The deceased was a member of the Church of the Friendly Brethren.

Jail Prisoner Dies
Edward ("Zeb") Shively, of Bluffton, Ind., died at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday night in the Allen county jail, less than two hours after he had been seized with status epilepsy. Shively was aged 39 years and was sent to jail last Saturday from the city court, where he and Corbett Conkley had been convicted of obtaining money by false pretense and were sentenced to pay fines of $20 and costs and forty days in jail.  It was shown that they had swindled Mrs. Harley I. Burgett, wife of a well known farmer, residing three miles east of Fort Wayne, on the Maumes road, out of $3.50 by pretending that Mr. Burgett had sent them to repair the cistern.  They meddled with the pumping apparatus for a time, broke a part of it, covered it up, collected their money and disappeared.  They came to town and got on a spree, during which they were arrested.  In court Saturday morning Shively showed the effects of excessive dissipation.  Drs. Kane and VanBuskirk were called Tuesday night to attend Shively, but he was past aid.  Brothers of the deceased man residing in Bluffton were notified and the body was turned over to Klaehn & Melching.

Investigate Brother's Death
Bluffton Men Inquire Into Dying Of "Zeb" Shively In Fort Wayne Jail
Bluffton, Ind., Oct. 17. -- David and Sherman Shively went to Fort Wayne this morning to make a personal investigation of the facts surrounding the death of their brother, Elmer or "Zeb", in the Allen county jail last Tuesday night.  They talked with the officers at the jail, with the doctors who were called to attend their brother and with Corb Conklin, of this city, who was arrested with Mr. Shively and who is still in jail there.
They stated on their return to Bluffton that they are far from satisfied with their discoveries and that they will investigate further.  They say that their brother was a sick man when he was placed in jail and that he was not given medical attention until his condition became desperate.  He had been a sufferer from heart trouble and his condition was serious from this and other causes when he was placed in jail.  The doctors told them that when they were called there was nothing that could be done for their brother.  The Messrs. Shively feel that he should have had medical attention long before.  They say that Conklin assured them that the statement from Fort Wayne that he was well and ate heartily is false.
Conklin also told them that he and "Zeb" were not guilty of getting money under false pretenses and that they actually cleaned the cistern and were entitled to the money they received from the Fort Wayne woman whose husband later caused their arrest.

The following article was found in The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette, Monday Morning, October 1, 1906, Page 16, Column 4:
Five Hundred Drunkards In Wells County
George Cotton Is Compilling A List Of Them And Says There Are
Fully That Many To Go On His Books
(Bluffton News.)    Some man in each township of the county will assist George Cotton in his crusade against the saloons, but he is not yet ready for their assistance.  The law provides that a notice not to sell liquor must be given by some resident of the township in which the man resides and so Cotton cannot give notices against any man who does not live in Harrison township.  Here is where his assistants come in.  If a man in another township is to be placed on the list a man residing in the township will serve the notices so as to make them legal.  Cotton says that when he has completed his list it will contain 500 names and that there are fully that many drunkards in the county.
"Zeb" Shively is consulting attorneys with a view to bringing suit against Cotton for defamation of character by placing his name on the list.  He not only objects to having his name there, but further to being called "Zeb" Shively, as Cotton has done in his notices.  "Zeb" Shively is a nickname and his right name is Elmer, which title he wants Cotton to use. Cotton served thirty-five more notices to-day, most of them going by registered mail.

A "lost" brother, Harvey H. Shively, has been sought for over a year without success by relatives.  His brother, William D. Shively, who died on January 4 and was buried last Friday had long searched him.  William Shively lived in Dickinson and was ill only two hours before he died.  Other survivors are his wife and a son, Lester; and two sisters, Mrs. J. M. Landis,  of Brooklyn, and Mrs. A. L. Weaver, of Newville.

In Steelton, Dauphin County, PA in December 1915 Nicolo Kotur and Joso Bakic got into an argument.  Joso Bakic was found dead outside of the boarding house where they lived.   There are numerous articles in The Patriot relating to this murder.   In The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Tuesday, February 15, 1916, Page 1, Column 4  an article appeared that lists Harvey Shively as being present at the trial.  Not only was he present but as the article states he was pulled from being a spectator to being a member of the jury.  The article records:
At this point court adjourned.
Two spectators who entered the court room early yesterday afternoon did not get home last night.  They are Harvey H. Shively and William Metzgar, who were locked up with the rest of the jurors as the “guests” of Sheriff Caldwell.  They were picked from the audience after the regular panel had been exhausted. The other ten on the Kotur jury are:  John M. Madden, Millersburg, foreman; Joseph G. Beckwith, Seventh ward, city; George E. Eldridge, Ninth ward, city; Charles K. Hess, First ward, city; Henry W. Snyder, Ninth ward, city; Joseph Lutz, Thirteenth ward, city; Walter Liebfield, Derry township; Alpha Fraut, Steelton; John Dubbs, Hershey; and A. B. Gardner, city.

From the following article it is recorded that Harvey Shively and  fellow jurors found Nicholo Kotur guilty of first degree murder:
The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Thursday, February 17, 1916, Page 1, Column 3:
Guilty Of Murder In First Degree
Kotur, Angered At Verdict Of Jury, Becomes Sarcastic In Remarks
Nicholo Kotur will be the first person from Dauphin county to die in the electric chair, unless means can be found by his lawyers to stay the penalty for murder in the first degree, the verdict returned by a jury late yesterday afternoon after little more than an hour’s deliberation.  He was convicted of killing Joso Bakic, a fellow-countryman, in a Steelton boarding house last December 22.
As the jurors, one by one, solemnly pronounced the word “guilty” the first trace of emotion he has shown since his arrest stirred in Kotur.  The three days’ trial was utterly devoid of anything dramatic on his part, and the impression grew that he was ignorant of English.  But at its conclusion the doomed man sprang to his feet.
Hot With Anger
“Thank you, Mr. Jurors,” he cried in accents that rang clearly over a tense courtroom.
His voice vibrated and his face colored with hot passion.  Hs head dipped quickly in the mockery of a bow.
Under the scorn and hatred blazing in his narrow eyes a few jurors turned red.  Then he strode toward (continued on Page 12, Column 6)  the door was was led back to his cell across the alley, composed once more.  On his way he remarked simply to Deputy Sheriff Hoffman: “Good-bye, everybody.  I go chair all right, all for notting.”

Nicholo Kotur was given a second trial and in December 16, 1916 he was found guilty once more.  From The Patriot, Harrisburg, PA, Tuesday,  October 2, 1917, Page 5, Column 3:

Kotur Paye Death Penalty In Chair
Nicolo Kotur, convicted of the murder of Joso Bakic at Steelton on Christmas 1915, yesterday paid the penalty in the electric chair at the Center County Penitentiary.  He was electrocuted at 7:10 a.m.

Could it be that Harvey Shively being involved in this trial had something to do with the fact that he seems to have "been lost" to his family?  Harvey and wife Ella are listed on the 1910 Dauphin County, PA, city of Harrisburg census. Harvey or Ella could not be located on the 1920 census records. It appears that Harvey H. Shively may have relocated to Jefferson County, OH.  Located on the 1930 Jefferson County, Ohio, Village of Toronto, Island Creek Township, 405 Main Street is an entry for Harvey H Shively, age 50, widowed, occupation Carpenter, Furniture and in the household is John Armour, a roomer, age 61, single, occupation as a Laborer for a steel mill.  There is an Ohio death certificate for a Harvey Shively, age 66, who died in Jefferson County, Ohio on 1-July-1937.  He is listed as living in the "Jefferson County Home".  The informant for the information on the death certificate was L. W. Adrian, Superintendent of the Jefferson County Home.  Harvey's birth information and parents were listed as unknown.
