This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

PIONEER BIOGRAPHY

An interesting sketch of the life of George Shively, of Austintown

By John M. Edwards

Editors Register & Tribune:

At the last pioneer reunion the subject of collecting biographies of the pioneers and early settlers was frequently spoken of, but no definate plan adopted to obtain them. This is very desirable, and if some one or more in each township, hand with the pen, would visit the veterans and the children & neighbors of those who have passed away, and take notes of the histories they could relate, a very valuable amount of historical & biographical information can be collected. Will our friends in the Valley do this, and report to me, or any other officer of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society, the result of their labors, for publication & preservation among our records. We have already some valuable biographies & desire all that we can obtain.

Enjoying an interview with a venerable & highly respected pioneer of a neighboring township, a few days since, I noted down some facts on his life as he related them & herewith present them:

Biography of George Shibely

George Shibely, of Austintown, was born in Tyrone township, Cumberland County (now Perry County) Pennsylvania, November 8, 1798. He came with his parents to Austintown, Trumbull County (now Mahoning County) Ohio in May, 1812, passing through Youngstown, which then consisted of only a few log cabins on each side of the main street, and grass was growing in the streets. The family came in a big wagon drawn by a four-horse team.

His father’s name was Frederick Shibely, after whom Frederick S. Whitsler, of Youngstown, a son of one of his daughters in named. He died at the age of 56 years. George’s mother died at the age of 63 years. Frederick Shibely bought a tract of land on the “Racoon Road”, as it is called, in the east part of Austintown, on which George now lives, and to which he has made some additions. The land at that time was all woods, and the father & son immediately went to work & cleared up a farm. Frederick and wife had eleven children - six sons & five daughters - who all lived to adult age. Four have died; the rest are living.

George married Elizabeth Opp in Austintown, by whom he had two children. She only lived a few years after the marriage. He married for his second wife Maria Grove, of Austintown, daughter of Wendall Grove, a revolutionary soldier; & sister of John & Andrew Grove. By her he had six children. The 8th - 4 sons & 4 daughters - are all grown up & married. He recollects the events of his early life and the conditions of the country and manners of the people then.

He says the early settlers were very accommodating and always ready to help one another. They always went to log cabin & other raisings, on which occasions whiskey was plenty as water; and was considered indispensable. He speaks of one instance in which the man who had united his neighbors to help him raise, refused to furnish whiskey and found it difficult to get his cabin up. He was well acquainted with Judge Tod, Colonel Hillman, James Mackey, Colonel Rayen and the old citizens of Youngstown. He saw Colonel Rayen in his uniform in command of his regiment, when he had them ready to march to the frontier in the fall of 1812, and says the Colonel was a fine looking man.

This old pioneer, now in his 82nd year, was never sick but once, which was about 40 years ago. Packard attended him. Mr. Shibely was afraid he would not get well. Dr. Packard assured him that he would recover & that he might perhaps live twenty years longer. “And now”, he says, “I have lived forty years longer, and nothing ails me but old age”.

The old gentleman has frequently visited Youngstown this winter on business.

Carey Monroe Shively And Wife Theda Addie Howard Who Lived In Mahoning County, Ohio

Carey Monroe Shively was born 5-April-1860 in Mahoning County, Ohio, the son of John B. Shively and Susanna King. John B Shively and Susanna King were married in Mahoning County on 25-October-1855.  Carey Monroe Shively was married to Theda Addie Howard in Mahoning County on 26-December-1891. Carey Monroe Shively died on 26-March-1934 in Mahoning County.

The following newspaper article was extracted from The Salem News, Salem, Ohio, Tuesday, March 27, 1934, Page 1, Columns 4-5:
Berlin Center Man Who Hoped To Ride Bicycle On 100th Birthday Is Dead
Carey Monroe Shively Will Be Buried Thursday In $30,000 Mausoleum He Built Himself
Carey Monroe Shively, Berlin Center jeweler who had hoped to celebrate his 100th birthday by riding his cherished high-wheel bicycle, died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, 26 years short of his goal.
Thursday, he will be laid to rest in the gleaming marble mausoleum which he built for himself and his wife a few years ago in Berlin Center. Acquaintances said it cost him $30,000.
Official Of Canfield Bank
Shively was widely known throughout the county, not only for his fondness for his old "high-wheeler" but as a shrewd business man.   For many years he served as a director and vice president of the Farmers' National Bank at Canfield.  He retired last fall because of poor health.
Born April 5, 1860, in Milton township, Shively was a son of John and Susanna King Shively.  His mother was born in Berlin Center, while his father came from Pennsylvania.  when he was a small child the family moved to Berlin Center.
For about eight years he operated a general store in Berlin Center and for 30 years was a jeweler and optometrist.
Liked To Ride Bicycle
Shively found great satisfaction his high-wheeled bicycle.  Ever gleaming with reminiscence, he told often how he first rode it 20 miles to Youngstown on his 17th birthday, and recalled how it "burned up the road".
The bicycle cost $135 when new.  He claimed that it was the first high-wheeler to have rubber tires.  It always occupied the same corner in a building adjoining his office.
Even in his later years, he  continued to ride it remarking: "For thrills and smooth riding, give me the bicycle." He made it a point to ride the bicycle on his birthday and six years ago, rode it about city streets of Youngstown.
Mr. Shively had an automobile, but was rather timid about driving it, especially after he was injured five or six years ago.  He refused to drive to Youngstown, and when he had business there, he would drive to Canfield, and catch a ride into the city with a friend.

Before his death Mr. Shively had made all arrangements for his funeral service, which will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the family home.  He left a note giving the dimensions of the size of the crypt in the mausoleum, so that they would know the size of a casket.

Never Seen A Ball Game
To live thirty years in the world, and to have never seen a game of ball, is the unusual distinction enjoyed by Frank Shively, assistant to Agent Turner of the Pennsylvania.
When interviewed in the status of the case Shively admits it to be a fact that he has never seen even a single inning of an exhibition of the national game.  When the cause is asked for, Frank replies that the reason for his missing so much of the elixir of life is the fact that he has been constantly on duty, day and night, ever since his early youth.  While he regrets having never seen Bill Smith gallop around the thistles in center, or to have witnessed the unusual exhibition of Schintter striking out, he says that he is content to do without the pleasure of going to Cascade to see the Nocks play.

Shively Is Back

With the scent of the Pacific sea breezes still fresh in his matted locks, Frank Shively, ticket clerk for the Pennsylvania lines in this city, blew in yesterday after a month's trip through different parts of the west.  Shively visited San Francisco, Denver, Pasadena, and other localities.  He reports a pleasant outing.

New Castle Man Goes To Sharon
F. C. Shively Will Take Vacancy Caused By Resignation Of Gaylor
Announcement was made today that Ticket Agent E. H. Gaylord, for the past 13 years in charge of the Sharon office of the Pennsylvania Railroad company, has resigned, his resignation becoming effective on July 20.  He will be succeeded by F. C. Shively, for a number of years past, ticket clerk at the New Castle station, says the Sharon Herald.
The announcement came as a great surprise to Mr. Gaylord's numerous friends. He has been in the employ of the Pennsy for the past 21 years.  For five years he worked in the freight office in Sharon and for three years he was located in New Castle.  Then he spent six months in the Youngstown offices before taking charge of the Sharon office in 1903, succeeding Joseph Hardy.  He has been efficient and obliging and during his long tenure of office has done much to increase the Pennsy passenger business out of Sharon. He has not yet decided upon his future movements, but will locate somewhere in the west.
Mr. Shively, who will succeed him, is one of the best known of the younger Pennsy passenger men and is highly popular with patrons of the line.  In his New Castle position and his fraternal affiliations he is well known to Sharon people and he is assured of a warm welcome here.
