Johnathan J. Shively was born on 12-Sep-1834 in Ohio and died 27-Jul-1909 in Springfield, Sangamon County, IL. He was the son of Conrad Shively (1806-1878) and Mary Magdalena Grise (1816-1883). Conrad Shively was the son of Conrad Shively (1773-1850) and Mary Moyer (1771-1863). Conrad Shively was the son of John Shively (1748-1781) and Eve Berger (1750-1814). John Shively was the son of Christian Shively (1718-1772) and Esther Naff (1719-1803). Johnathan J. Shively married Emma W. Derry (Dairy) in Virginia on 31-Jan-1864.  Located on the 1850 District 26, Keokuk County, IA census is the household of Conrad Shively age 44, wife Mary 39, daughter Elizabeth age 18, son Johnathan age 15, son Peter age 13, son Samuel age 11 and daughter Mary A. age 9.  Listed on the 1870 Sigourney Township, Keokuk County, IA census are J.J. Shively age 36, wife Emma age 27, son Warren age 6, daughter Clara age 3, son D. E. age 10 months,  Mr. Karr age 49, Leah age 26, A.M. age 2, Edna age 10 months, Da. Shively age 21, wife Mar. age 23, daughter Eli. age 8 months and Abraham.  Listed on the 1880 Illiopolis Township, Sangamon County, IL census is household of John Shively age 46, wife Emma age 36, daughter Clara age 12, son David age 10, daughter Nora age 3,  Benjamin Botts age 26, Richard Phillips age 22, James Huffman age 23, and William Derry age 25. On the 1885 Sigourney Township, Keokuk County, IA State Census are Johnathan J. Shively age 50, wife Emma W. age 41, daughter Clara age 17, son David E. age 15,  and daughter Nora age 7.

Shively--The funeral of J. J. Shively was held at 10 o'clock yesterday morning from the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Lee Metcalf, at Illiopolis. A quartette consisting of Mrs. Harry Dickerson, Miss Fairie McCoskle, William Matthews and Thomas Chamberlain, sang several selections.  The sheriff and deputy sheriffs of Sangamon county attended in a body and placed on the bier a beautiful floral design.

The internment was made in a cemetery near Rochester. The pallbearers were H. C. Roberts, William Matthews, Alexander Kinehan, John Shelber and Harry Faith of Illiopolis, and Charles Clendenin of this city.

J. J. Shively was born at Canton, O., September 12, 1834 and died at Springfield, Ill., July 27, 1909, aged 74 years, 10 months and 15 days.

He moved to Iowa with his parents early in life, but at the beginning of the civil war he went to Virginia, in the employment of the government and there he married Emma W. Derry, January 31, 1864.

At the close of the ware they moved to Illinois, where they resided until 1881, in which year they moved to Iowa where his wife died November 26, 1889. This union was blessed by seven children, two of whom, Mrs. Clara Metcalf and Miss Nora B. Shively, together with two brothers, three sisters and two grand children still survive him.

At the beginning of the civil war he heard and responded to his country's all and offered his services in the defense of its flag, but was refused enlistment on account of bodily injuries. Unable to overcome this, and still moved with loyalty, patriotism and love of home and country, he did all that that he could do and entered the employment of the government remaining until the close of the war.

While thus engaged he was with the Army of the Potomac and suffered many of the privations and dangers incident to the movements of that great army, among which was months of sickness in the army hospital.

Early in life he obeyed the commands of his Savior and united with the Methodist church, since which time he has lived a conscientious, consistent, constant, upright, christian life. All through his long active life he encountered many difficulties, but conquered them all by his christian fortitude and patience. His Bible was his sweetest companion and to it he always went for solace and for comfort. Profane, vulgar or harsh words had no placement in his language. With a keen sense of duty he always tried to do all things well. Quiet, reserved, and ever considerate of others, his memory will be cherished the most by those who loved him and who knew him best.

"Grandpa" Shively led an earnest, honest christian life.

With confidence and trust he rested his faith and hopes on the Rock, Christ Jesus, and leaning hard on the promises of the world's Saviour, he passed calmly and without fear from death and darkness into eternal sunshine and life everlasting.

The newspaper obituary for Clara Shively Metcalf follows. It is believed that the parents of Clara Shively are incorrectly listed in the article.   She was the daughter of Johnathan J. Clara Metcalf Taken By Death

Illiopolis, Feb. 7  -- Mrs. Clara Shively Metcalf, 57, widow of Lee C. Metcalf, who was a prominent grain man, died at 8:50 o'clock this morning at Presbyterian hospital, Chicago. She has been a resident of this town for thirty-three years.

Surviving are a son, Dean Metcalf, Chiago; a daughter, Mrs. M. M. Fletcher,  Illiopolis, and a sister, Miss Nora Shively, Springfield. The children and sister were at her bedside when she passed away. Her husband died in January 1921.

Decedent was a daughter of the late John and Emily Fletcher. She was a member of the Sarah Dake chapter, Eastern Star, and the Christian church.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at Illiopolis Christian church. Interment will be made in Riverside cemetery.

Miss Nora B. Shively, 97, of Pana died at 12:40 a.m. Wednesday in Pana Community Hospital. 

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday in the McCracken Funeral Home, Pana, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Rochester Cemetery, Rochester.

Surviving are nephews, Jack Metcalf of Chicago; James Metcalf of Washington, D.C.

Listed on the 1880 Georgetown, Clear Creek County, CO census is Benjamin Turney age 65 and David Shively age 40.  Listed on the 1900 Precinct 6 Minturn, Eagle County, CO census is David Shively born Aug-1842 age 57, wife Elizabeth born Apr-1842 age 58 married 20 years having given birth to 7 children and 5 who are living, daughter Goldie L born Jan-1883 age 17, daughter Birdie L born Jun-1884 age 15 and daughter Mable B born Nov-1886 age 13.

The Glendower lode, on Columbia mountain, owned by Peter and David Shively, continues to rank well as an ore producer. The owners are drifting and stoping on a vein that mills over 500 ounces first class, and from 200 to 300 ounces second class, and A. B. Clark & Co. have commenced to sink a shaft, at the end of a 60-foot-cross-cut which they have driven to the lode, which shows a small vein of good ore.

Two Deaths

David Shively And His Granddaughter Pass Away Same Day

David Shively, a pioneer and highly respected citizen of Gore creek passed away very suddenly at his home on last Saturday evening. The same night, a few hours later, his little granddaughter, Hattie, the six-month-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Evans, died at the home of Mr. Evnas' mother in Red Cliff.

About twenty years ago Mr. Shively located on a ranch on Gore creek and had resided there ever since. For some time he had not been in robust health, but had kept about his duties and on the day of his death had been to Red Cliff with a load of produce supplying his regular customers in this line. He reached home in the evening and a few moments after his arrival was seized with a violent hemorrhage of the lungs and expired in a few moments after the attack.

Mr. Shively was 63 years of age and his sudden and unexpected death was a shock to his relatives and many friends. He leaves a widow and a family of grown children.

The little daughter of Mr. Evans had been ill several days with brain fever and the day before her death was brought to Red Cliff by her parents that she might have closer medical attention. The little one however succumed on Saturday night (early Sunday morning) as stated.

The funeral of both Mr. Shively and the baby was held at the same time at Minturn on Tuesday, with interment at Avon cemetery.

Haden Shivley, Mahaska County, Iowa To Madison County, Illinois

Limited information could be found on Haden Shivley who is first located on the 1900 Mahaska County, Iowa census record in the household of William A Shivley age 49 and wife Maude age 40.  This article can be used as a research guide for Haden Shivley but more research is needed.

Hade Shivley is located on the1900 Mahaska County, Iowa, Harrison Township census.  In the household are William A Shivley born March 1851, wife Maud born July 1859, son Hade born June 1881, daughter Nellie born May 1887, son William born November 1889, son Harry born September 1890 and son Edward born December 1896.   There is a William A Shivley listed on the 1915 Iowa State Census, age 62, in Benton County, Iowa in the town of Belle Plaine.  Buried in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Belle Plaine, Benton County, Iowa is William Abraham Shivley who died on 12-Dec-1926.  Listed on the census records in 1860, 1870 and 1880 in Sigourney Township, Keokuk County, Iowa in the household of Conrad Shively (1806-1878) and Mary Magdalena Grice (1816-1888) is an Abraham Shively.

Mrs. Ruby Shively, of Collinsville, has entered suit in the circuit court for an annulment of her marriage to Hayden Shively, on the ground of cruelty.  Mrs. Shively was formerly Miss Ruby Ackerman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Frank Ackerman who moved from here to Collinsville. Her marriage to Shively took place in this city July 12, 1904, and they resided together until last month.  They have one child, a daughter about two years old.

Ruby Shively vs. Hayden Shively, divorce; decree for complainant who is awarded custody of their child and household goods now in possesion of defendant.

No additional information could be found on Ruby Ackerman Shivley or daughter Navita Shivley after the newspaper articles with the last being dated 1908.  Ruby Ackerman was located on the 1900 Madison County, Illinois, Jarvis Township, City of Troy census in the household of Frank Ackerman and wife Alice M.  Ruby was born September 1886 and also in the household was her brother, Edward who was born September 1884.  Listed in the Illinois death records are John Frank Ackerman born 20-August-1863 in Troy, Illinois and died 4-June-1923 in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois.  Also listed is Mary Alice Ackerman who was born 11-March-1864 in Illinois and died 16-June-1916 in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois.

There is a Haden Schiber, age 26, divorced who is boarding at 300 1/2 E. Main in Collinsville, Illinois listed on the 1910 Madison County, Illinois census.    From the World  War I Registration records is Haden Shively, age 36, born 18-June-1881 who is living at 109 South Morrison in Collinsville, Madison County, Illinois.  He is a yard foreman at a retail lumber yard.  On the 1920 Madison County, Illinois census at 109 South Morrison is Haden Shivley, age 38, who is a laborer at a lumber yard. Listed on the 1940 Madison County, Illinois census is Hayden Shively age 58, lodging at 203 North Morrison and working as a bartender in a saloon.    Listed on the World War II Draft Registrations is Haden Shively, age 60, born 18-June-1881 in Iowa and residing at 201 North Morrison, Collinsville, Illinois.  His employer is John Cagnola, 201 North Morrison, Collinsville, Illinois, who operates his own saloon.

The Illinois death records list Hayden Shivley, certificate number 0050975, with a death date of 16-December-1948 in East St. Louis, St. Clair County, Illinois.

Frederick Shively And Elizabeth Ream From Stark County, Ohio

The early newspapers in Stark County, Ohio have many articles relating to the surname Shively.  Frederick Shively was born about 1798  and died in Stark County on 29-Oct-1883.  He was married to Elizabeth Ream on 3-Sep-1828.  Frederick was the son of Conrad Shively and Mary Moyer.  The parents of Conrad Shively were John Shively (born 24-Jul-1748, later carried away by Indians) and Eve Shively.

The death of Frederick Shively was recorded in The Canton Daily Repository, Canton, Ohio, Monday evening, 29-Oct-1883, Page 1, Column 6:

Suddenly Called

Mr. Frederick Schively Died After A Few Minutes Sickness

About noon to-day the startling news that Mr. Frederick Shively, of No. 294 South Market street, had dropped dead was current on the street.  A Repository reporter repaired to Mr. Joseph Shively (his son’s) residence, No. 66 East Tuscarawas street, to learn the truth of the rumor, and there, lying cold in death, was the corpse of the well  and favorably known citizen.  He had been up town this morning, and while walking on Seventh street suddenly fell to the pavement.  A passer-by helped the old gentleman up and with difficulty he walked to his son’s residence, and was met by Mrs. Joseph Shively and helped up stairs, this being about 11:15 o’clock.  He sat in a chair for a few moments and then laid down on a bed, saying he was not feeling well.

Dr. Johnson was sent for, but before he arrived he died.  The doctor attributed the sudden demise to paralysis of the heart.

Mr. Shively has been a resident of this city for a great many years and is known by nearly every one, and stood high in the estimation of all who knew him.  He leaves five children to mourn his loss.  The children all well advanced in years.  Mr. Shively was nearly eighty years of age.

Frederick is listed on the 1850 Stark County, Ohio, Nimishillen Township census .  In the household are Fred Shively age 42 a shoemaker, wife Elizabeth age 38, son Seraphin age 13, son Josiah (also listed as Joseph in the records) age 10, son Ed age 5, and daughter Ellenora age 2.

Seraphine Shively Dies At His Home On Jackson Street This Morning – His

Family In Goshen, Ind. And The Time Of The Funeral Not Decided Upon

Mr. Seraphin Shively, aged about 60, an old resident of Canton, died at his home, No. 8 Jackson street, at 10:30 o’clock this morning from neuralgia of the stomach.  Mr. Shively is well known in this city and his many friends will learn with regret of his demise.  His family, excepting his daughter Carrie, are in Goshen, Ind., and until their arrival the time of holding the funeral cannot be decided upon.  He was a man of generous heart and had gained for himself hosts of friends.  To them and his family this will be a sad blow.

Josiah Shively Is Dead At 71 Years

Josiah Shively, 71, died Tuesday night at his home, 219 Hazlette avenue. Bronchial asthma caused his death.  Mr. Shively had lived in Canton since early youth, coming here from Louisville.

He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. George Sweatt, 721 Fulton street, and Mrs. Ed T. Johnson, 1025 West Fourth street, and three grandchildren.

Funeral services, which will be private, will be held at the residence Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock.  Burial will be in Westlawn cemetery.

Seraphin Shively was married to Francis F. Cunningham.  Her obituary is recorded in The Evening Repository, Wednesday, February 11, 1908, Page 1, Column 6:

Death Of Mrs. Shively From Paralysis – Former Teacher In Public Schools

Mrs. Francis F. Shively, relict of Seraphim Shively died at 5 o’clock, Wednesday morning at her home, 532 South McKinley avenue from paralysis, her father, Thomas Cunningham, was one of the principal builders and contractors many years ago.  Her mother, Mrs. Cunningham, died at Mrs. Shively’s home a few years ago, the oldest person in Canton then.  Mrs. Shively for more than 12 years, was a teacher in the public schools and was popular and efficient, in that capacity.  In 1865 she was married to Seraphim Shively who died in 1892.  Mrs. Shively had four children, Nora C., Caroline E., Fred and Thomas C. Shively, who are living with their mother, the two daughters being school teachers in the city.  When Mrs. Shively was 15 years old she joined the First Baptist church and had at all times been active in Christian work.  One sister, C. B. Campbell, of this city, and Oliver and Henry Cunningham of Indiana, survive.

The children of Seraphin and Frances Shively remained in the Stark County, Ohio area.  The dates of their deaths are recorded as:  Nora C. Shively died 22-June-1940 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery, Canton, Ohio; Caroline E. Shively died 4-May-1952 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery; Fred M Shively died 25-March-1921 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery; and Thomas C. Shively died 24-June-1947 with burial in Westlawn Cemetery.

Thanksgiving Day Wedding In 1934

Lyle Joseph Shively and Edna Mary Steintrager were married on Thanksgiving day on 29-November-1934.  A record of the wedding was extracted from The Canton Repository, Canton, Ohio, Friday November 30, 1934, Page 14, Columns 3-4:

Ceremony In St. Peter’s Church With Reception Afterwards

The marriage of Miss Edna Steintrager, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore A. Steintrager of 1413 8^th St NW and Mr. Lyle J. Shively, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Shively of 900 Maryland Ave SW, took place Thanksgiving day at 10 o’clock in the morning.  There was a nuptial high mass in St. Peter’s Catholic church, Rt. Rev. Msgr. George N. Habig officiated.

Mr. Edward J. Betzler, organist, played the nuptial music and the mass.

The bride was given in marriage by her father.  She wore a lovely bridal gown of old ivory moiré with a long train of graduated ruffles, a yoke and long sleeves ending in ruffles over her hands.  Her veil was of ivory tulle and was held in place with a band of orange blossoms.  She carried a Colonial shower bouquet of Johanna Hill roses, sweet peas and lilies of the valley.

Miss Pearl Steintrager was her sister’s bridesmaid.  She was charming in a gown of ashes-of-roses taffeta made with a short train of ruffles and ruffled trimming on the bodice.  Her accessories matched her gown and her flowers were Talisman roses in a Colonial bouquet.

Nancy Jane Keffler, cousin of the bridegroom was flower girl.  Attired in a ruffled yellow taffeta frock made with a yoke of Irish lace, she carried a Colonial bouquet of mixed flowers.

Mr. Donald L. Betzler was the best man.  Mr. Paul V. DeVille and Mr. Leonard A. Betzler were the ushers.

Immediately following the ceremony there was a wedding breakfast for the members of the immediate families at University Manor.  Decorations were in yellow and white.  The bridal table was arranged with a tiered wedding cake, yellow flowers and greens.  Lighted tapers were at either end.

In the afternoon from one to three an informal reception was held at the home of the bride’s parents.

Later in the day, Mr. Shively and his bride left on a motor trop.  They will be home after Dec. 9.  For her going-away costume the bride chose a brown swagger suit with matching accessories.

Lyle J. Shively was the son of Frank J. Shively and Almeda Manly.  He was born 15-March-1905 in Ohio and died 7-February-1973 in Los Angeles, California.  His wife, Edna Steintrager Shively, was born 25-September-1911 and died 19-August-1990 in Newport Beach, California.

Frank J. Shively (1860-1936) and Almeda Manly (1871-1941) are located in the following census records:  1900 Stark County Ohio, Nimishillen Township, Louisville Village; 1910 Stark County Ohio, Canton Township, Canton City; 1920 Stark County Ohio, Canton Township, City of Canton; and 1930 Stark County Ohio, Canton Township, Canton City.   From the census records it is known that Frank and Almeda had the following children:  Marie born December 1890, Charles born February 1893, Zoe born ca. 1901, and Lyle born March 1905.

Frank J. Shively was the son of Samuel Shively and Eugenia “Jennie” Vauthier.  Children of Samuel (ca 1821-1881) and Eugenia (June 1830- unknown) included:  Mary E. born ca 1847; Frances born 29-January-1852; Hannah born ca. 1855; Eugenia “Jennie” born 28-March-1857; Seraphine (Frank J.) born 3-May-1860; and Dora born 15-October-1861.

Samuel was the son of Conrad Shively and Mary Moyer.  Conrad Shively was the son of John Shively and Eve (last name unknown).  John Shively was captured by Indians in 1781 and never heard from again.  This information is located in the Arthur G. Black work entitled Descendants of Christian Shively of Warwick Twp., Lancaster Co. and Later York Twp., York Co., Penna., (1941).  John Shively (1748-1781) was the son of Christian Shively (1719-1773) and Esther Naffin.
