This site was created by Larry Shively who is researching the history of the Shively families. The goal is to have a site where all Shively researchers can share and ask questions in regards to their Shively lines. The largest majority of the Shively family records are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. There are early records of Shively's also in Virginia and Kentucky. There are not many established Shively lineages back to Europe. There are documented lineages to Switzerland and Germany. Through the sharing of information from all of our research it is desired that all can learn about our Shively families.

The following articles are in regards to the accident and death of Solomon Shively:
Probably Fatal Accident
Solomon Shively, a well known farmer, living two miles north west of town, met with a terrible accident Monday evening, which will in all probability result fatally, if he is not already dead by this time. Mr. Shively and his hired man, a young man by name of Boyer, were hauling in hay and a pulley on the hay carrier in his barn broke while unloading a load. Mr. Shively climbed up on a ladder to the carrier in the comb of the barn to fix the carrier. While he was in the act of doing so a bunch of hay, which was fastened on the hay fork, was tripped off and set the carriage in motion, throwing Mr. Shively from the top of the ladder. He was carried or thrown across the hay mow any the rope of the hay carrier and fell a distance of over thirty feet striking upon his head and shoulders on the barn floor. The hired man being unable to restore him to consciousness summoned the neighbors as Mr. Shiveley’s family was away from home at the time and Dr. Lower was sent for. An examination showed that one leg was broken and his skull badly fractured at the base, besides other bad bruises and probably internal injuries about the body. The doctor pronounced his case very critical and with little hopes of recovery. At last report yesterday morning he was still alive but had not regained consciousness and there was very little if any hopes of his recovery. Mr. Shively is about forty-five years of age and has a family of several children.

Solomon Shively Dead
Mention was made in our last issue of the frightful fall of Solomon Shively from his hay mow on Monday evening and the dangerous condition of his injuries. He died about ten o’clock Thursday night having never regained consciousness. From the first the doctors pronounced his injuries fatal but as he continued to live his family wanted everything done that might save his life. Dr. McCaskey, of Fort Wayne, was sent for and with Dr. Lancaster, of this city, performed an operation by which a portion of the injured man’s skull was cut out and some clotted blood removed from his brain. The operation, we are told, had no perceptible effect on the patient and he still continued in a comatose condition, death resulting as above stated.
The decease was a man age 43 years, 8 months and 14 days at the time of his death, having resided in this community all his life. He leaves a wife and four children, besides a number of brothers and other relatives to mourn his death. Funeral took place Saturday forenoon at then o’clock at the old Dunkard church a mile west of town, Elders Balsley and Jacob Mishler officiating. The services were very largely attended, the church being crowded to over flowing. Burial took place at the Swank cemetery north of town.

S. H. Shively Dies Suddenly
S. H. Shively, 74, prominent architect of Fremont, and a leading citizen, died quite suddenly this noon at the family home, 1308 west state street, of a heart attack, following an extended illness with heart trouble. He had been confined to his bed the last four weeks and, while his condition was serious, his death, however, came unexpectedly.
The body was removed to the Ochs mortuary to prepare for burial and will be taken back to the late residence this evening. No funeral arrangements have yet been made.
Samuel H. Shively was born in Fremont on February 23, 1855, a son of Henry and Christina Engler Shively, early pioneers of the city. He always resided in this city, growing to young manhood here, and on September 8, 1881, marrying Miss Anna W. Hubbell of Maumee, O. Their wedding was solemnized in the Methodiest church of that place and the groom brought his bride to Fremont for her future home.
Mr. Shively was the father of five children, four of whom survive him, together with his wife and mother. One daughter, Ida, died in infancy. Those living are R. H. Shively of Scranton, Pa; Mrs. P. L. Bollen, Mrs. Dawson Eisenhour and C. H. Shively, all of Fremont. There is one grandchild, Miss Elizabeth Shively of Scranton, Pa., together with one sister and one brother, Mrs. Sophia Hufford of Fremont, and George E. Shively of McCoy, Ore.  A very large relationship will also mourn his death.
Mr. Shively had been a leading architect in Fremont for almost half a century. It would have been 48 years in December that Mr. Shively opened his office in this city, and it has never been closed  a day. At the time of his death, his son, C. H. Shively was associated with him in the business, having been his father's partner for the last 12 years. Together they designed all of the new school buildings of the city and have the contract for the new junior high to be erected next spring. Mr. Shively also designed the new additions to the Fremont high school building.
Other structures designed by him were the handsome new St. John's Lutheran church, St. Mark's Lutheran church, St. Ann's Catholic church, St. Joseph's school and countless other buildings, both of a public and private character. He was a skilled artist in his profession, and his work always stood the test of time. The son, C. H. Shively, plans to carry on the work begun by his father and will continue at the Shively office.
Mr. Shively was a Mason by lodge affiliations, and his funeral will likely be under Masonic auspices. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, in his home, and, although much in the public eye, by reason of the important work of his profession, he still was a very retiring and unassuming man. He had hosts of friends who will regret to learn of his death and who will offer sympathy to the bereaved family.

The lineage of the William Shively family appears with the name of Daniel Shively on the 1830 and 1840 Huntingdon County, PA records. The 1850 Huntingdon County census is the first census that lists names of the Shively family and children. On this census is Daniel Shively born ca. 1798, wife Mary born ca. 1804, Samuel Shively born ca. 1834, Mary born ca. 1837, Minerva born ca. 1838 and John W. born ca. 1844. The PA death records for the mother of William S Shively, Elizabeth A Saylor,  list her birth date as 20-Oct-1839, daughter of Samuel Saylor, and her date of death as 21-Feb-1911. She was buried in Newport Cemetery, Perry County, PA. A newspaper obituary for Elizabeth Saylor Shively was found but when comparing with other records seems to be full of errors. The following was extracted from The Wilkes-Barre Record, Wednesday, February 22, 1911, Page 5, Column 4:

Samuel Shively (Shiebler) And Wives, Susannah Henry And Mary Henry, From Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania

Samuel Shively/Mary Henry Marriage
There are times in the hobby of genealogy when a Shively story comes along that just has to be researched and shared. Following is a newspaper article that was located and some supporting data found to support the story.

Extracted from The Democratic Press, Ravenna (Portage County), Ohio, Thursday, July 9, 1874, Page 2, Column 5: About the first of May Samuel Shively and wife made his advent into this goodly city, and took up his abode.  On Wednesday last, a brother-in-law, who, it seems, was bound to him by a two-fold bond or relationship,, presented himself to constable Trail, and gave him a photograph of his interesting relative, and requested him to lay upon him the hand of the law.  Mr. Trail soon had him in charge, when upon a hearing the following facts were elicited:
Samuel Shively is a native of Westmoreland county, Pa., was born of poor but honest parents, and when he had come to years of maturity, gave his hand and his heart to Susannah Henry.  They lived in peace and harmony until their home was blessed with four little Shivelies.  A couple of years since the Shivelies removed to Tiffin, this State, taking with them a sister of Mrs. Shively's.  During these two years Mr. Shively, became convinced that he could make a better wife of his sister-in-law then he could out of Susannah.  So on the 20th of April last, leaving Mrs. Shively and all of the little Shivelies in Tiffin, he departed with Miss Henry, junior, for Dayton, where he obtained the legal documents which would enable him to conter upon Miss Henry the honorable distinction of being known as Mrs. Shively No. 2. But "man proposes &c", and Mr. Z. Henry, a brother-in-law of this too much married man, heard of the state of affairs, and traced the happy couple to Alliance, where he had him arrested on a charge of bigamy.  He was bound over to answer in $500.

Pennsylvania death certificates were located.  For Samuel Shively he was born 11-Oct-1842 in Pennsylvania, a son of Jacob Shively and (unknown) Kepple.  Samuel died in Westmoreland Co., PA. on 9-Jul-1909.  He was buried in Hillside Cemetery, Westmoreland Co.,  His stone lists Samuel Shiebler 1842-1909, Co F 103 Pa Inf and wife, Mary M (1852-1924).   The death certificate for Mary Shively states born Sep-1852, daughter of Frederick Henry and Liddy Eseman.  Mary died 2-Apr-1924 in Westmoreland Co.   The death certificate for the first wife of Samuel Shively was located and it would appear she married a second time to a Mr. Campbell.  The death certificate lists Susan Campbell, born 25-May-1846, daughter of Frederick Henry and Lydiann Gross.  Susan died 3-Jul-1914 in Westmoreland Co.  She was buried in Brush Creek Cem.

Further supporting the Henry family connections was the 1907 newspaper obituary of Lydia A. Henry which mentions Sue Campbell, Z. T. Henry, and Mrs. Samuel Shively.

Mrs. Henry was a noble Christian woman and leaves a blessed heritage to her loved ones.  She is survived by the following children:  Z. T. Henry, of West Virginia; Noah F. Henry, of Tarentum; Mrs. Sue Campbell and Mrs. Ellen Gongaware, of Manor; Mrs. Samuel Shively and Mrs. F. P. Myers, of Greensburg.  She is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  Her husband, Fred Henry, died several years ago.
Funeral services were held at the residence of F. P. Myers, Greensburg, at 10 o'clock, Friday morning, after which interment was made in Brush Creek cemetery.

Located on the 1880 Hempfield District, Westmoreland Co., PA census is Samuel Scheibler age 37, wife Mary age 27, son Harry age 5 and son John age 2.  On the 1900 Hempfield Townshp, Westmoreland Co., PA census is Samuel Sheibler born Oct 1843 age 56, wife Mary born Sep 1852 age 48, son John born Apr 1879 age 21, daughter Anna born 1880 age 19, son Howard born Dec 1882 age 17, son Edward born Mar 1884 age 16, daughter Laura born May 1886 age 14, son Lawrence born Mar 1891 age 9 and nephews Russell White and Floyd White.

The newspaper article above from Ravenna, Ohio mentions that Samuel Shively and first wife, Susannah Henry, had four children.  Two of the children for Samuel and Susannah may have included William Shively and Mary Jane Shively. Located in the records was Mary Jane Shively who married William Shuey.  Extracted from the Westmoreland Co. marriage records it is known that Mary Jane Shively and William Shuey were married on 8-Mar-1887 at the residence of Samuel Shively. Consent of the father, Samuel Shively, was given for the marriage.  The parents of Mary Jane Shively were listed as Samuel and Susan Shively.

The newspaper obituary for John Shivley, son of Samuel Shively and Mary Henry, mentions half-sister, Mary J. Shuey and half-brother William Shivley.  Extracted from The Daily Courier, Connellsville (Fayette County, PA), Monday, December 28, 1953, Page 7, Column 5:
